Carson Beck gave the Arizona Cardinals a small sample of what he can do in the NFL

Carson Beck might not have had a star-making performance in the Hall of Fame Game, but he definitely made a heck of a first impression.

Beck, who was selected in the third round (65th overall) by the Arizona Cardinals, looked comfortable in Mike LaFleur's offense, leading the unit to three straight scoring drives against the Carolina Panthers.

Beck played the first two and half quarters of the game and showed off his accuracy, decision-making and maybe a little more arm strength than he had with Miami last season. The Hurricanes probably didn't get the best of Beck last year. He spent most of the last offseason recovering from elbow surgery and at times he showed signs of a tired arm.

But that's a year behind Beck now and LaFleur wanted to put that arm to the test Thursday night. Beck delivered on his end, going 15-of-19 for 188 yards and a touchdown. He should've had well over 200 yards, but he was victimized by a drop on a deep ball that would''ve added at least another 40 yards to his total.

“I think he did a good job,” LaFleur said of Beck’s preseason debut. “He was operating, he was playing within the plays that we gave him, played within the play of what the defense was giving him. I thought, again, that he operated well.”

A healthy Carson Beck will start in the NFL

No need to overhype the preseason opener where no starters and very few guys on either team's two-deep suited up, but Back is trying to get on that two-deep depth chart and there is a pathway to the backup spot behind Jacoby Brissett.

The Cardinals have a plan for Beck. He was the third quarterback selected in the draft and any team that picks a player in the first three rounds eventually expects them to be a starter. Beck had such an extensive resume in college that the scouting report on him was pretty clear. The questions were about his health.

Beck is fully healthy. He showed that his arm was live and NFL quality and now the Cardinals know that he will seriously compete with veteran Gardner Minshew to be the QB2 for the season opener on September 13. Things couldn't have gone better for Beck in his first action as an NFL player, now let's see what he'll do for an encore.
