Carson Beck injury puts a temporary pause on former Miami star's impressive NFL start

Carson Beck will not play for the Arizona Cardinals against the Las Vegas Raiders on Thursday night because of a rib injury he sustained during last week's Hall of Fame Game against the Carolina Panthers. The injury is not considered serious.

Cardinals coach Mike LaFleur has already mentioned that Brissett and Arizona's starters will play in the preseason game against Las Vegas, likely for only one or two drives. Gardner Minshew is also expected to see action. It remains to be seen whether the QB plan changes for the matchup.

Beck practiced through soreness during the week, but Arizona ultimately decided there was no reason to push their rookie quarterback through an injury for a preseason game. The decision is considered precautionary and will now give Beck extra time to recover.

Beck got the start against Carolina while Jacoby Brissett and Gardner Minshew II sat out. In the game, he completed 15 passes for 188 yards and a touchdown. The best thing that Carson Beck did for himself was not throwing an interception, since a turnover would have allowed his haters to have a field day.

The Cardinals selected him with the No. 65 overall pick in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft after his lone season at Miami (3,813 yards, 30 touchdowns and 12 interceptions). With the preseason performance last week, and the fact that the organization invested a third-round pick into him, there is reason to believe he could be the starter at some point in the season for the Cardinals.

Sitting Thursday also shows that the front office is making sure that one of their most valuable assets doesn't go down in a preventable way. The Cardinals host the Dallas Cowboys on Aug. 22, nine days after the Raiders game, before finishing the preseason at Green Bay on Aug. 28.
