The Hurricanes' football program stands at the top of the university's athletic success. With five national championships (1983, 1987, 1989, 1991, and 2001), Miami has cemented its place among college football's elite. The 2001 national championship team is often regarded as one of the greatest in the sport's history, with a roster that produced numerous NFL stars. The program has also produced two Heisman Trophy winners: Vinny Testaverde in 1986 and Gino Torretta in 1992.
Miami's baseball team has captured four national championships in 1982, 1985, 1999, and 2001. The Hurricanes have also made 22 appearances in the College World Series.
The men's basketball program made its first Final Four appearance in the 2022–2023 season. The women's basketball team has some notable seasons as well. Former head coach Katie Meier, who announced her retirement in March 2024 after 19 seasons, led the Hurricanes to 10 NCAA Tournament appearances and an Elite Eight appearance in the 2023 Tournament.
Women's Golf: The team has five national championships, with titles in 1970, 1972, 1977, 1978, and 1984. Four of those championships are recognized by the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women, which was dissolved in 1983. Women's Swimming and Diving: The Hurricanes have national championships in 1975 and 1976. The Miami polo team was undefeated in tournament play from 1948 to 1951. Polo is no longer a varsity sport for Miami.
As the University of Miami commemorates 100 years, the Hurricanes continue to be a powerful symbol of South Florida athletics.
