Darian Mensah to Malachi Toney might be the most dangerous QB-WR connection in college football this season, and we're just getting a small taste of it this spring.
Both Mensah and Toney are considered Heisman contenders and the Miami Hurricanes are the runaway favorite to win the ACC and potentially receive a top-four seed in the College Football Playoff 12-team bracket. They are using the spring to build some chemistry and get a feel for each other, but even in these skeleton reps, it's hard to hide the excitement of what will happen this fall.

One of the reasons Mensah made such a high-profile and contested transfer from Duke is because the Hurricanes are in a position to compete for a championship immediately and one of the big reasons they can do that is the emergence of Toney, who was a five-star freshman that managed to live up to the hype all 16 games last season.

Mensah will have an assortment of talented wide receivers to throw the ball to, including his former Duke teammate Cooper Barkate, a 1,000-yard receiver last year, and two other top transfers — Vandrevius Jacobs (South Carolina) and Cam Vaughn (West Virginia). There will also be plenty of interest in sophomore Joshua Moore, a four-star recruit from the 2025 class that had 17 catches for 210 yards last season.
But make no mistake about it, Toney is the guy. He set team records with 109 catches and 1,211 yards and ten touchdowns. He was the ACC Rookie of the Year and a Freshman All-American.Â
And Toney's numbers weren't just fluff. He showed up in the big games despite being the key focus of every opposing defense. He had 10 catches for 122 yards and a touchdown in the championship game against Indiana.Â
Toney's versatility should match well with Mensah. Offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson will line Toney up out wide, in the slot, in the backfield. He'll use him in motion and on misdirection. If there was a way to get Toney the ball last season, Miami figured it out. Now the Hurricanes will have one of the best quarterbacks in the nation pulling the trigger and the possibilities for Toney this season is endless.Â
