Another day, another head-turning update when it comes to quarterback Darian Mensah trying to sign with Miami. The former Duke standout was officially entered into the transfer portal, but there's still a hold on things that will prevent him from making things official with the Hurricanes.
Mario Cristobal linked to an NFL opening and Miami fans can't believe it
Mensah is hoping to change that immediately. On Friday morning, ESPN insider Pete Thamel has reported that the elite quarterback target filed a request to 'reconsider the temporary restraining order' that was put into place not long ago.
Essentially, Duke has been trying to block this move due to an NIL deal being signed, but Mensah and Miami are still trying to make this work. The Canes and the quarterback also want things to speed up here a bit:
The argument Mensah's lawyers make here is that the TRO that prevents him from enrolling in another school "could permanently foreclose opportunities for Mensah to enroll at other collegiate institutions." Darian Mensah is hoping his Miami move can be finalized as soon as possible
On Monday, Miami lost a heartbreaker to Indiana with the CFP title on the line. Despite that result, Mario Cristobal has been working overtime in building the 2026 roster, as the Canes are hoping to bring home the natty next winter.
For a lot of people, it feels like Mensah is the missing piece to making Miami a serious contender to win it all next season. In back-to-back seasons, Cam Ward and Carson Beck have been stellar transfer QBs for Cristobal, with Beck having Miami only a couple plays away from winning it all.
What can we all expect from Mensah if he makes the move to south Florida? That's something we'll find out soon enough, but first things need to get settled behind the scenes. Miami seems to have confidence this will get sorted soon, but Duke sure is making things tricky.
At the same time, Duke is also eyeing potential replacement quarterbacks, which seems to hint that the Blue Devils know it won't have luck in blocking Mensah from playing for Cristobal. Things are still a bit in flux here, but the hope is that everything will get settled ASAP. And with that, Mensah will be able to start classes at Miami and get himself ready for spring ball.
