4-star Miami commit, QB Dereon Coleman, was one of the many recruits who visited Coral Gables this past weekend. And if Miami fans were wondering about his commitment status in the current, crazy world of college football that we live in, it's safe to say he's still all in on the Canes.
Coleman has consistently asserted that Miami is the place for him. "My commitment’s been shut down since I committed," Coleman said. "I don’t know why schools keep offering me. I don’t wanna see no other schools. I only have one official visit. That’s Miami."
Over the weekend, Coleman posted photos on X that show his official visit which is another promising sign for the future Miami QB.
We had a great time supporting @DereonColemanQB on his Official Visit. He’s 100 % locked In, he bleeds 🟠🟢 #NoFoldInHim#AllAboutTheU#GoCanes@baylintrujillo @CaneSport @CanesInSight @AllCanesU @CaneSport @larryblustein pic.twitter.com/oFptc9aIH3

As a sophomore at Jones High School, he led his team to the state semifinals, passing for 2,236 yards and 16 touchdowns. During his junior season, the 5-foot-11, 190-pound Coleman completed 203 of 279 passes amassing 3,412 yards, 28 touchdowns, and only four interceptions. He also contributed 455 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 74 carries.
Over the past couple seasons, Miami has used the transfer portal to find their quarterback. In 2024 it was Cam Ward and in 2025 it will be Carson Beck. Ward ended up going No. 1 overall in the NFL Draft and Beck hopes to find similar success. If Beck has a breakout campaign to raise his draft stock then Miami will certainly be on the radar for many different QB's who enter the transfer portal for 2026.
But, looking ahead beyond what would be Coleman's true freshman season, Miami may opt to go with their young talent that was recruited from high school. Coleman is a Florida-native who even worked out with Ward prior to the draft. The type of buy-in from a recruit isn't uncommon but it is nice to see in the ever-changing world of college football. That's what makes Coleman different and we may see him throw passes in meaningful games sooner rather than later.
