The Miami Hurricanes are set to meet with safety A.J. Haulcy on Wednesday, according to his agency, APSportsAgency. Haulcy, a First Team All-Big 12 selection from Houston, recently entered the transfer portal. Haulcy is rated as a 4-star transfer, the No. 1 player in the portal at his position and the No. 12 player overall by 247 sports.

Haulcy began his career at New Mexico. As a true freshman, he played in all 12 games, starting the final nine. He led the team with 87 tackles, including 38 solo stops, and added two interceptions and two forced fumbles. His performances earned him a spot on the Pro Football Focus True Freshman All-America team, making him the first player from New Mexico to receive this honor.

He then transferred to Houston and has started every game over the past two seasons. Haulcy started all 12 games in his first season, leading the team with 98 tackles and 73 solo stops. In 2024, he continued his strong play, recording 74 tackles, five interceptions (tied for the Big 12 lead), and 13 pass breakups (second in the conference). His performance earned him First Team All-Big 12 honors from league coaches, the Associated Press, and Phil Steele.

Miami's interest in Haulcy aligns with their efforts to build the secondary after recent turnover in that department. The Hurricanes new defensive backs coach, Zac Etheridge, previously coached at Houston but the time that Haulcy spent with the Cougars did not overlap. Perhaps there is still a connection that can be built to help the Hurricanes secure the top safety in the portal.

In addition to Miami, programs like LSU, Texas Tech, and Kentucky have been linked to Haulcy's recruitment. The NCAA spring transfer portal window remains open through April 25. Haulcy's decision could significantly help the Hurricanes secondary for the upcoming season.
