Former Miami quarterback Carson Beck is moving closer to his first NFL start after a significant shakeup in the Arizona Cardinals' quarterback room. The rookie has been promoted to the team's primary backup behind Gardner Minshew, while former starter Jacoby Brissett is expected to be traded to the Baltimore Ravens.

Carson Beck is closer to starting for the Cardinals

Arizona coach Mike LaFleur announced Monday that Minshew would take over as the starting quarterback following the Cardinals' 33-30 overtime victory against the Dallas Cowboys. The decision also elevated Beck from the emergency third-quarterback role he had occupied throughout the first eight weeks of his rookie season.

The changes continued Wednesday when Arizona and Baltimore began finalizing a trade involving Brissett, who started the Cardinals' first eight games before being benched against Dallas.

Minshew earned the starting job with an impressive performance against Dallas after replacing Brissett late in the third quarter, when Arizona trailed 17-3. The veteran completed 17 of 23 passes for 188 yards and three touchdowns, directing four consecutive touchdown drives before leading the Cardinals to the winning field goal in overtime.

Brissett had completed just 10 of 23 passes for 119 yards and an interception before being replaced. He finished his eight starts with 1,719 passing yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

When could we see Beck on the field?

It's unlikely that the Cardinals will throw Beck out into the middle of a game. Even if Minshew is playing poorly, it is not smart to risk the confidence of a rookie QB to try to find a spark in a random regular season game. At the minimum, Minshew would need to play subpar for at least two games before Beck will see the field.

The Cardinals travel to Seattle on Sunday to face the Seahawks before returning home to play the Los Angeles Rams on Nov. 15.
