The Giants released former Miami receiver Braxton Berrios on Sunday when they set their initial 53-man roster, but the cut is not meant to be the end of his stay in New York.

Berrios is a vested veteran, which means he does not go on waivers and can sign with any team immediately. New York can re-sign him to the 53 after other roster moves, or it can put him on the practice squad and elevate him for the opener. The expectation is that he returns in some capacity.
Berrios signed with the Giants in June after Gunner Olszewski tore an Achilles tendon in the offseason program. In the preseason, he put up two catches for 24 yards in three games, including a 15-yard reception in the finale against the Jets, and a lost fumble near the goal line in that same game.
The Giants kept five wide receivers on the first 53: Malik Nabers, Darius Slayton, Darnell Mooney, rookie Malachi Fields and Odell Beckham Jr. Jalin Hyatt, Xavier Gipson, Isaiah Hodgins, Dalen Cambre and Kobe Prentice were among the receivers who did not make the cut.
Berrios was a first-team All-Pro returner with the Jets in 2021 and has 1,130 punt-return yards and 2,265 kickoff-return yards in his career. He has 140 receptions for 1,360 yards and six touchdowns for his career.
Last season in Houston he played four games and caught six passes for 37 yards. Before that he spent two years with the Dolphins after four with the Jets. New England drafted him in the sixth round in 2018. He spent the rookie year on injured reserve and was waived the next season before the Jets run started.
At Miami he finished with 100 receptions for 1,175 yards and 14 touchdowns. His senior year in 2017 was 55 catches, 679 yards and nine touchdowns.
