From watching Miami legends to becoming one: Mark Fletcher Jr. embraces his moment

Mark Fletcher Jr. said becoming a role model at Miami “means everything” in an interview with Pete Nakos of On3.

Pete Nakos of On3 quoted running back Mark Flether Jr., stating, "Little Mark would be so happy right now for what I’m doing. As a kid, I watched all the great UM players and looked at them as superstars. ...The fact that I’m that now to other little kids, it means everything."

Fletcher Jr. signed with Miami in the 2023 class as the 151st-ranked prospect, ninth RB and 34th player in Florida out of Fort Lauderdale, American Heritage, per the Rivals Industry rankings. Fletcher Jr. made an immediate impact with Miami as a true freshman in 2023 and has improved each season with the Hurricanes.

Fletcher Jr. led Miami with 105 carries and was second with 514 rushing yards with five touchdowns as a freshman. In his sophomore season in 2024, Fletcher Jr. was second on Miami to Damien Martinez with 112 carries for 607 yards and nine TDs.

Fletcher Jr. led Miami with 216 carries for 1,192 yards and 12 TDs and added 17 receptions for 140 yards and another two scores as a junior in 2025. All of those were career highs. Nakos also quoted Fletcher Jr. as stating that he and Miami have unfinished business after losing to Indiana in the National Championship Game.

Setting records and mentoring

Fletcher Jr. set the College Football Playoff career rushing record when he finished with 517 yards during the Miami run to the National Championship Game. As the most experienced RB on the Miami roster, Fletcher Jr. has been able to be a mentor to the rest of the Hurricanes at his position.

Fletcher Jr. is also a leader on the entire Miami team. After his father, big Mark, died in October 2024, the Miami team embraced Fletcher Jr. Fletcher Jr. continues to text his father's phone number before Miami games. Fletcher Jr. was quoted after Miami beat Florida State in the game immediately after his father died.

“It meant everything to me...It just shows the brotherhood we have. I just played a good game, and I’m not even the one who had all the greatest stats, but they just showed that to me, to show how much they supported me. I’m nothing but appreciative.”

Fletcher Jr. was shown as a leader and gifted his teammates Adidas apparel during the CFP run by the Hurricanes. As Miami seeks to make another CFP run in 2026, Fletcher Jr. will continue to be one of the leaders for the Hurricanes this season.
