Mario Cristobal loves recruiting the best of the best to play for the Miami Hurricanes. That means that he's bringing in a lot of blue-chip talent that every other top program in the country also wants to sign. But the Hurricanes staff also searches far and wide for recruits that might be a little undervalued, but present significant upside. We've already seen it with players like defensive back OJ Frederique, who was fairly under recruited despite playing for a powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas program.
There are a couple of players in the current recruiting class that also fit this mold, but it looks like Rivals/On3 might've caught on to one of them — Jayson Dawson. The edge rushing prospect from Palm Beach County was upgraded from a three-star prospect to the 102nd-ranked player in the country in the network's recent update, which also meant a new four-star status.

Miami commit Jayvon Dawson gets 4-star treatment from Rivals/On3
Dawson had been evaluated by the Hurricanes staff on multiple occasions and had attended events on campus before. So when Cristobal and defensive ends coach Jason Taylor finally extended the offer in early May, it took Dawson less than a week to make his pledge.
Since making his commitment, Dawson has seen his stock rise with a series of impressive performances on the camp circuit, both at Miami's elite camp, where he jumped in to take reps against some of the best offensive tackles in the country and at The Opening showcase a couple of weeks ago.

Dawson's updated ranking with Rivals elevates him to a top-10 player in Florida and the 11th-best edge rusher in the country. Immediately, Dawson's frame catches your eye. He's nearly 6-foot-4 and nearly 220 pounds with good length. Once you envision the work that he'll get in the weight room and the coaching he'll receive from one of the best pass rushers in NFL history, it's easy to see that Dawson could emerge as one of the top guys in a class loaded with talent.
His attitude is another thing that Cristobal, Taylor and defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman are going to love. Dawson is hungry. He gives full effort in every rep. He is responsive to coaching. He is very competitive and doesn't take this opportunity for granted. In many ways, he probably reminds Taylor of himself — an under-recruited talent out of high school with a little bit of a chip on his shoulder.
"Coach [Taylor] is just showing me that he wants me to be a better player," Dawson told Sebastian Font of CanesInSight after his official visit in June "He wants me to be a better man, better player, and better student."
