Jordan Lyle has felony charge dropped and could suit up for Miami sooner than later

Jordan Lyle's pathway to the field took a major step forward Wednesday night when his felony charge for fleeing and eluding an officer was dropped. Lyle now only has to deal with a misdemeanor charge for reckless driving. He was arrested on August 13 and was released the same day after posting a $5,000 bond.

This settles much of the legal process for the running back that Mario Cristobal was letting run its course. Now the question is when will the junior get back on the field for the Miami Hurricanes. That will be up to the discretion of the coach and just because Lyle is out of the legal hot water doesn't mean he's done with Cristobal's discipline.

Jordan Lyle's status for Thursday's game is undetermined

With most of the major legal issues behind him, Lyle could very well play in the home opener against Florida A&M, but don't expect anything to be settled until Cristobal releases the final availability report before the game.

Prior to the arrest, Lyle was expected to have a big role in the Miami running game this season. Mark Fletcher is the undisputed starter and Marty Brown plays a key role with his ability to run, catch passes and provide reliable pass protection. Fletcher and Brown handled the bulk of the work in Week 1 against Stanford. Girard Pringle received 11 snaps and freshman Javian Mallory had seven.

Stanford decided to load the box in Week 1, and it kept the Hurricanes from getting much done on the ground. Brown (eight carries, 37 yards, touchdown) and Mallory (three carries, 31 yards) were the most impressive of the backs. Cristobal was complimentary of the effort the unit put forth despite how tough it was to get yards.

"[Javian] Mallory played well. I thought Marty played really well. I thought Pringle almost came out of one and almost took it to the house as well. He was sick going into the week, so it was good to see him out there as well," he said on the Joe Rose show. "I just thought all the backs, they ran hard, right? They knew it was going to be muddy. They had to run behind their pads and make some, get some yards after contact."

Lyle was the starting running back in last season's opener against Notre Dame, but he was injured early in the game and dealt with a nagging high-ankle sprain for most of the season. However, Lyle was arguably the best running back in fall camp and was looking at another opportunity to have a big role in the rotation. But after this latest setback, Lyle is going to have to get in where he fits in...whenever Cristobal decides to let him play.
