Mario Cristobal is going to say the expected lines when it comes to Jordan Lyle's status at practice or his availability for the Miami Hurricanes going into the season.

"We're waiting for legal to take its course of action, and we'll decide everything from there," Cristobal said today during his media session, repeating words similar to the statement that the University released when word of Lyle's recent arrest became public.

Javian Mallory has a chance to make an early impression

Miami's practices and scrimmages are completely closed, so we don't know if Lyle is practicing, running stadiums or being held out, and Cristobal isn't going to reveal anything until he feels like it.

But we can assume that Lyle is dealing with some sort of punishment, and it might affect his availability for the season opener against Stanford. That means that the door is cracked for another young player to step into that role, and freshman Javian Mallory might be the guy ready to kick it wide open.

Mallory might not be one of the more well-known names in the 2026 recruiting class, but he was a four-star prospect according to the 247Sports Composite and was ranked as the 418th-best player in his class. ESPN had Mallory ranked as a top-20 running back in the country.

He's a big back, listed at 5-foot-11 and 210 pounds, Mallory rushed for 1,114 yards and 14 touchdowns while averaging nearly 10 yards per carry for a West Boca team that has won consecutive state championships. So, he's a winner who has been involved in big situations already. There's a reason why Miami had to beat out Alabama, Michigan, Notre Dame, Clemson, Ohio State and a host of others that recruited Mallory.

"What I want you to know about me every time I step on the field this year is that I'm here to work," Mallory said to Ibis Media. "Growing up I wasn't a Hurricanes fan, so I didn't know what it meant to put that 'U' on my chest. But now I know what it is."

Again, no one knows exactly what Lyle's status is or will be, and there are other players, like Girard Pringle Jr., who are going to be fighting for those carries. But Mallory's arrival just proves that there's no room to stumble or sleep on the Miami depth chart. The starters have to be ready to go every day and the backups have to be ready to go every day because someone is always waiting in the wings to take over.

And in the crowded Hurricanes backfield, that someone just might be Mallory.
