Malachi Toney's freshman season was so productive — 109 receptions — that Miami's career receiving record is already in play.

Xavier Restrepo left Miami as the program's all-time leader with 200 catches, putting Toney 91 away from tying the record and 92 from passing it.

Malachi Toney could finish his sophomore season with prestigious Miami record

The sophomore broke Miami's single-season receptions record in 2025 while also finishing with 1,211 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns. Restrepo had owned the previous single-season record with 85 catches in 2023 before closing his five-year career with 200 receptions, 2,844 yards and 21 touchdowns.

The yardage chase is tougher since Toney would need 1,634 receiving yards in 2026 to pass Restrepo's career total. And he would need 12 receiving touchdowns to move past Restrepo's 21 career scores.

Both are possible long-term targets, but the receptions record is the one that can realistically disappear this season.

Toney will catch passes from QB Darian Mensah rather than Carson Beck, and Miami has more proven options around him than it did at the start of last year. And if Toney stays healthy for all three seasons, he'll be in place to break every receiving record in Miami's books.
