Malachi Toney reaches major Miami milestone in Cotton Bowl CFP quarterfinal

Malachi Toney reached a major milestone in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal against Ohio State on Wednesday.

With a four-yard reception against Ohio State on Wednesday night in the Cotton Bowl College Football Playoff quarterfinal, Malachi Toney became the seventh Miami player and recorded the eighth 1,000-yard receiving season in program history.

The record-breaking reception came on the third drive of the game for Miami with 2:50 left in the first quarter. Toney had one carry for four yards and one reception for five in the Cotton Bowl College Football Playoff quarterfinal before recording the record-breaking reception.

Toney also became the first receiver in Miami history with 90 receptions with his first catch against Ohio State. Toney set the Miami single-season reception record in the College Football Playoff first round. Xavier Restrepo previously held the record with 84 receptions in 2024.

It has been a record-setting season for Toney. Toney broke the Miami freshman record previously held by Ahmmon Richards with 49 receptions for 934 yards and three touchdowns set in 2016. At the time he eclipsed 1,000 yards, Toney has 91 receptions for 1,001 yards and eight TDs.

Toney has been consistent throughout the season

With the record-setting reception, Toney has a catch in every game this season. Entering the game against Ohio State, Toney has at least two receptions in every game in 2025. Toney has at least four receptions in every game but one and five in all but three contests in 2025.

Toney has four games with at least 100-yards receiving. In all but two games entering the Cotton Bowl, Toney has recorded at least 40 receiving yards. Toney had five receptions for 22 yards and a TD in the 10-3 CFP first round win at Texas A&M.

With his breakout performance in 2025, Toney earned the ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year and ACC Rookie of the Year. The 2025 season for Toney will go down as one of the best performances in the history of the Miami football program.
