True freshman wide receiver Malachi Toney set the Miami single-season reception record on Saturday with his second catch against Texas A&M. Toney now has 86 receptions to break the record set of 85 set by Xavier Restrepo during the 2024 season.
Toney broke the record with a reception that lost a yard in the second quarter. The record setter did not occur until the fourth drive of the game for Miami. Toney has 968 receiving yards this season. If he gets to 1,000 yards receiving, Toney would be the seventh Hurricane to accomplish that in a single season.
Toney had been on a hot streak entering the game against Texas A&M. In the final two games of the regular season, Toney had 25 receptions for 272 yards and two touchdowns. Toney previously shattered the Miami freshman records set by Miami Ahmmon Richards with 49 receptions and 934 yards in 2016.
Toney should become the first Miami receiver with 90 receptions in a single season. If Miami advances to the College Football Playoff quarterfinal, Toney will have an opportunity to become the first Miami receiver with 100 receptions in a single season.
More potential records ahead
Charleston Rambo holds the Miami single-season record with 1,172 receiving yards set during the 2021 season. Toney would have a decent chance to reach Rambo's record if Miami beats Texas A&M to advance to the CFP quarterfinal in the Cotton Bowl against Ohio State on New Year's Eve.
By the time Toney concludes his Miami career, he should break Restrepo's program records. Restrepo finished his Miami career with program records of 200 receptions and 2,844 receiving yards from 2020 through 2024 seasons.
All of the accomplishments from Toney during the 2025 season have been after he reclassified from the 2026 class and as a former three-star signee. Without question, Toney has had the best freshman season in Miami history.
