Malachi Toney's Heisman hype will only go up after nearly making Miami history

Malachi Toney was one catch away from the Miami record book on Friday, and he is now another week deeper into a Heisman conversation that could be headlined by two Hurricanes.

Malachi Toney has laid the foundation for his Heisman case

Toney logged 12 receptions against Wake Forest, just one short of the Hurricanes' single-game school record. That record is shared by Mike Harley Jr. against Duke in 2021 and by Toney himself against Pittsburgh last season.

He has now posted 12-catch games three times in the last 10 months, and twice already as a sophomore.

Toney finished with 114 yards and a 2-yard touchdown in Miami's 33-20 win over the Demon Deacons. It should be noted that he was banged up after halftime, but he still ended with another game that will boost his Heisman chances and set him up to have a "Heisman moment" against a top-tier opponent.

How Malachi Toney stacks up against the rest of college football

Toney has 28 catches for 444 yards and five touchdowns on the season. Each one of those numbers ranks among the top five of college football and it will need to stay that way if he were to win the Heisman.
