Malachi Toney wants the Miami Hurricanes to remain the hunters despite their status as favorites to win the ACC. The mentality is one shared that should be adopted by his teammates because the only thing people love more than the rise is the fall.
Miami has been a college football dynasty before. The Hurricanes won four national titles from 1983-1991 and finished in the top-three for seven straight seasons. Then the fall came and everyone celebrated.
Toney, who is mature beyond his years, knows that for as many people that want to see Miami back at the top of college football, many more want to see them fail.

"I know what it feels like to come from nothing, so I wouldn't let the hype get to me," Toney said during Miami's pre-camp media day. "Because one minute they love you and one minute they hate you, so you've got to just keep going and keep grinding."
Malachi Toney wants to keep the mentality that made him a star
Toney has unprecedented success for a Miami wide receiver, setting a school record with 1,211 yards for the season and leading the FBS with 109 catches. That put him in the discussion for the Heisman Trophy and many other awards discussions. It's a lot to put on the plate of an 18-year-old who is playing for the school he grew up watching and loving.

The good news is that Toney loves the work. He loves the same things that Cristobal preaches about. He is never too far from the weight room or the film room or getting reps in with his quarterbacks and peers in the receivers room.
"He's a different level. Different level as a person and as a teammate. He's impacted the program and the people around him in a way that Miami has been hungry for," Cristobal said during ACC Kickoff.
Toney's words should put Miami supporters at ease. He understands the pressure that is on the program this year and in today's college football landscape there's no better time than now to achieve the desired results. There's a new quarterback, Darian Mensah, and with a new leader in the huddle, changes should be expected, and it might take some adjustment time, even for a player with Mensah's talents and experience.

It's easy to get complacent or go on the defensive to protect a certain status, but as Toney wisely points out, Miami got to this point by being aggressive and getting after it like they had something to prove. And until the Hurricanes win it all, they still have something to prove, so why change now?
