Mario Cristobal and Miami are setting the pace for 5-star playmaker in the 2028 class

There is a lot of positive news for the Miami Hurricanes coming out of Wednesday's elite camp. It was the final chance for Mario Cristobal and his staff to work with top targets, mostly from the 2028 class, and host them on campus in an unofficial capacity before the summer dead period started.

As expected, the camp was loaded with top players from the state and around the country. There's a long way to go for many of those targets, but the Hurricanes are already still in a good position for top-ranked wide receiver Brysen Wright, an in-state prospect that will likely be the subject of a recruiting battle between Cristobal and Jon Sumrall.

Holland writes in his report:

"Wright hadn’t visited Miami since last year, so it was a good opportunity for the Hurricanes to get some face time with the No. 1 wide receiver and No. 1 overall recruit in the 2028 recruiting class. Miami now has the lead for the five-star with a 34 percent chance of landing him, per the Rivals Recruiting Prediction Machine. Along with Miami, Wright is also high on programs like Florida, Ohio State and Texas."

2028 5-star WR Brysen Wright has a strong impression of Miami after unofficial visit

Holland is correct that the Rivals' predictor has Miami in the lead with about a 33-34 percent chance of landing Wright and the Gators are in second. I would say that sounds pretty accurate, but take those percentages with a grain of salt because FSU is third and... I mean let's wait to see what the new coach is going to do or if the Seminoles can even afford to fire the old one.

But what you should take out of this is that Wright's recruitment is likely going to shape up to be one where Cristobal and Sumrall are going to be going heads up with each other. Wright took an unofficial to Florida a few weeks ago and is seemingly high on both programs. The 2028 class is shaping up to be a strong one in Jacksonville with Wright and 5-star edge rusher Asher Ghioto both likely to be top-20 national prospects.

Miami has struck big with wide receivers over the past few recruiting cycles. Nick Lennear is the big name in the 2027 class, a five-star prospect who is playing his high school football right down the street at Carol City High School and, of course, the Hurricanes landed Malachi Toney in the 2026 class. Toney was barely a composite four-star prospect, which proves how much of an inexact science this is.

There's still a little more to do in the 2027 class because four-star wide receiver Eli Woodard is out there and Cristobal is hoping the former USC commit will be a late addition to the class. He took his official visit to Coral Gables on May 29 and is wrapping up his schedule this weekend at UCLA. But while the staff waits on Woodard, they are ready to begin the process of recruiting Wright in hopes of him being the next elite playmaker to sign with the Hurricanes.
