Another day and another Miami-Notre Dame showdown.
The big rematch on the field won't happen until November 7, but the Hurricanes and the Irish have been battling on the trail all spring with Mario Cristobal and Marcus Freeman getting their fair share of wins. But the recruitment for five-star defensive lineman David Folorunsho is going to put the two coaches head-to-head for the elite recruit out of Chicago.

"I think it's down to Notre Dame and Miami with Texas Tech as the dark horse," On3/Rivals national recruiting director Steve Wiltfong said. "I still have my prediction on the Irish. He has a lot of Notre Dame ties around his high school football program. He visited Notre Dame twice in the spring, including one trip with his Mom in a one-week span. "
That's not the update that Cristobal wants to hear, but Folorunsho did say that the Hurricanes were his leader after taking his spring visit to Coral Gables a couple of weeks ago. Currently, the Rivals' predictor has the Irish with a 76.4 percent chance of getting a commitment, but again, who knows for sure about Folorunsho, because he doesn't tip his hand very much either way.
It's a Miami-Notre Dame battle for 5-star DLÂ David Folorunsho
This isn't the first recruiting battle between the Irish and Hurricanes this week. Notre Dame landed the commitment of 5-star offensive tackle Oluwasemilore Olubobola earlier today after Miami had to back off to focus on Mark Matthews, a local 5-star offensive tackle recruit that the Hurricanes are battling Texas Tech over.
However, Miami isn't going to back away from Folorunsho's recruitment and they are diving straight into Notre Dame's most fertile recruiting ground, Chicago, to land another big target. Cristobal has done quite well in Chicago, landing blue-chip recruits like defensive lineman Justin Scott and pass rusher Marquise Lightfoot. The Hurricanes also have a commitment from Israel Abrams, one of the top quarterbacks in the country who resides in nearby Arlington Heights.Â
May 15 is shaping up to an an all-in day for Cristobal and Miami
Folorunsho is going to make his big decision on Friday and that's stressful enough for Cristobal and a staff that wants to own the reputation of landing the biggest and best recruits on the trail, especially on the offensive and defensive line. But May 15 is also the day that Matthews is going to make his decision between the Hurricanes and the Aggies. If both players decide to choose Miami, that immediately puts the Hurricanes on track to have a number one class and gives Cristobal commitments to three five-star players in a one-week span. Something nearly unheard of in today's recruiting landscape. Such a run would all but declare Cristobal the King of recruiting in the country.
Recruiting is a tough business and when Cristobal declared that Miami was going to be a major player for the elite prospects in the country, it was for days like Friday when all that hard work could pay off big time.
