During his meeting with reporters following the first spring practice on Monday, Miami Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal discussed the impact transfer quarterback Carson Beck has had on the program. Beck is expected to be out for most of spring practice after suffering a torn UCL in his right elbow in the SEC Championship Game.
Cristobal also discussed the recruitment of Beck and how quickly everything happened compared to Cam Ward transferring to Miami in the 2024 portal. As the quarterback for Miami, Beck is expected to be one of the leaders for the Hurricanes. This spring will be critical for Beck to build chemistry, leadership and relationships.
Beck will play with an almost all new Miami receiving corps. Miami lost their top six receivers after the 2024 season. Ward had the benefit of Miami returning their top receivers plus the addition of Sam Brown from Houston. Miami will be very young at wide receiver and tight end in 2025 except for LSU transfer WR C.J. Daniels.
David Lake of Inside the U quoted Cristobal during an appearance on the Joe Rose Show on Monday morning discussing how much Beck will participate this spring: "He will do it all except sling the ball...He will be standing behind the quarterbacks on every rep. It will be like virtual football."
Carson Beck is already impressing Miami coach Mario Cristobal
"As positive as you can have (impact) without actually having any kind of participation in live drills," Cristobal said of Beck on Monday. "The things happened so fast (With Beck signing) and that one certainly happened a little bit faster and with less familiarity than the previous year (with Ward). I would say relationships and leadership, they do take time, but everything from him initially has been super positive. We're really excited to see him healthy and working with our guys."
Beck arrives at Miami with his receiving corps primarily new to the rotation this year. Sophomore Joshisa Trader caught six passes for 91 yards last season in seven games with three for 61 and a touchdown in the Pop-Tarts Bowl loss to Iowa State. Trader is the most experienced receiver for Miami other than Daniels.
Expect Miami to add another WR through the transfer portal this spring. With Beck injured, the purpose this spring will be building chemistry as the players learn the system under offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson. The modified Air Raid is expected to fit Beck better than the more pro-style offense did at Georgia.
