During an appearance on ESPN's SportsCenter on Tuesday with Miami Hurricanes volleyball alum Christine Williamson, Mario Cristobal stated quarterback Carson Beck is running, but not throwing the ball yet as he recovers from an elbow injury sustained in the SEC Championship Game while playing for Georgia.
However, Cristobal stated Beck is very close to throwing and he is taking part "in all the stuff he can do and should be throwing soon, maybe in a couple of weeks." Miami will begin spring practice on Monday and conclude it on April 12 with the spring game at Cobb Stadium on campus.
Cristobal's comments make it clear Beck will not be ready for the start of spring practice. A couple of weeks would leave open the possibility that Beck will be ready to at least start throwing during some sessions. Miami usually practices three times per week during the spring.
With Beck out, rising redshirt sophomore Emory Williams, redshirt freshman Judd Anderson and 2025 signee Luke Nickel will have a chance to compete to be the primary backup spot to Beck. Williams has played in seven games with two starts in two seasons. Anderson appeared in only one game as a true freshman in 2024.
Mario Cristobal said Carson Beck is expected to start throwing soon
"He's doing well he's running really fast you know he's not throwing the ball yet but he's very close to doing so so he's taking part in all the stuff that he can do and he should be throwing soon maybe in a couple of weeks."MIami head coach Mario Cristobal
Expect Miami to continue to bring Beck along slowly. Having Beck healthy for spring practice would help him acclimate to playing in the system run by offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson and build chemistry with his teammates. Getting Beck healthy for the 2025 season is far more important.
Miami will add more players this spring. Expect another WR to provide Miami experience with Daniels and the young group Miami returns at the position. Cristobal was clearly high on Beck and compared the traits he has similar to Cam Ward. Beck will be one of the leaders for Miami in 2025.
