Now what for Miami football? That's what a lot of people have in mind after the Hurricanes let a game slip away on Saturday in Texas. There was no reason for Miami to lose to SMU, but in shocking fashion, an overtime defeat was posted.

The Carson Beck new QB smell has worn off for Miami fans

We can blame the officials all we want for some beyond questionable calls, but the fact of the matter here is that Miami dropped the ball late in the action and SMU took full advantage. As you might have been able to guess, Mario Cristobal was not happy following the final whistle, delivering some passionate words not long after his team fell to 6-2 on the year:

Mario Cristobal had some passionate words for Miami after the loss to SMU

Tell us how you're really feeling, Mario? He's of course not the only one upset, as Miami fans across the country are disgusted with how things went down. Miami was up 20-17 in the final moments, but a ridiculous penalty called on 4th down changed everything.

We're of course talking about Marquise Lightfoot hitting Kevin Jenning after Miami called a timeout. He clearly didn't hear the whistle and did his best to not take Jennings down. Still, the team in stripes threw the flag and SMU was given a free first town - it should have never happened.

SMU then went on to drive down the field and tie the game with a field goal before winning things in overtime. Cristobal said there are no excuses for the penalties and Miami has no one to blame but itself. Still, allow us to say that the decisions made by the officials were mind-boggling.

Despite that, the Canes didn't respond to adversity and the Carson Beck interception was back-breaking. Now, Miami's hopes to make the College Football Playoff and push for a National Championship are on the respirator.

The defense has looked strong, but it was the offense that let Cristobal and everyone down on Saturday. It's such a shame things are now looking gloomy for Miami's 2025 campaign, as it once had a ton of promise.
