In his sit-down with Josh Pate, Mario Cristobal sounded like a coach who believes Miami has moved into a different phase, one where the conversation is no longer about fixing a broken program but about protecting a standard that now exists.
Cristobal talked about the meeting after the SMU game that reset last season, the way Miami practices, what Darian Mensah has already looked like, and why he thinks the Hurricanes are built to keep this going instead of starting over.
Mario Cristobal explained how the staff helped Miami get through the SMU loss
He said, "that team meeting after the SMU game really kind of changed things," then explained that the staff cut together clips of the first five weeks showing Miami playing "physical, violent, tough, relentless football and let the team watch it in silence. Cristobal said the point was not to remind the players who they were, but to make them "realize who the heck we are."
Mario Cristobal also talked about spring ball
Cristobal said spring ball is "very important" now because younger players have already seen what the standard looks like from veterans such as Rueben Bain and Akheem Mesidor. He described those older players as the group that turned the place around after the 2022 season and said the younger guys were able to watch what champions look like every day during bowl practices.
Cristobal also said, "there's no focus on winning social media in the offseason. Our focus is to kick [butt] out there on Greentree Practice Field." He said the team practices right up to the edge physically but not recklessly, and he tied that directly to why the Hurricanes played their best football late in the year without looking worn down.
Mario Cristobal gave insight into QB Darian Mensah
Cristobal called the new quarterback "special," then went further, saying Mensah has "incredible pocket presence," is "deadly accurate," "incredibly smart," and "understands protections." Cristobal also said Mensah "quickly got the attention of our players."
Mario Cristobal also praised OC Shannon Dawson and DC Corey Hetherman
He said Shannon Dawson "should be a head coach right now" and praised him for adapting the offense to very different quarterbacks over the past three seasons.
You could hear the same confidence when he talked about DC Corey Hetherman. Cristobal said Hetherman's impact was "almost identical to what Greg Schiano did here," then praised not just the defense's production but the belief and toughness Hetherman created.
