Miami Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal offered a glowing update on quarterback Carson Beck during a meeting with reporters Thursday, giving fans a reason to be optimistic about the program heading into the 2025 season.
“Well, probably a little bit ahead of schedule,” Cristobal said when asked about Beck's recovery and integration into the team. “I know everybody would like to see him really wing it out there. But everything is ahead of schedule and we're very excited about his progress.”

“Carson is progressing well—probably a little ahead of schedule. We’re excited about where he’s at. He’s got a high football IQ, understands the game, and just has a natural presence about him.”#Canes pic.twitter.com/XAVX9QSJMv
The highly touted Georgia transfer, who was one of the top quarterbacks in the SEC last season, has yet to make his on-field debut in a Hurricanes uniform. However, Cristobal made it clear that Beck’s presence is already being felt in the film room, on the practice field, and within the locker room.
“I’m excited being around him because of his level of football IQ, the way he understands the game, just a natural presence about him,” Cristobal said. “In this sport, you’ve gotta take as many mental reps as you possibly can.”
Mental reps have been the theme of Beck’s offseason so far. While the physical side of his transition to Miami is still a work in progress, Cristobal emphasized the quarterback’s engagement with every aspect of the offense.
“It comes in the form of meetings, on the chalkboard and walkthroughs, during the course of practice, being behind the quarterbacks, getting every signal, communicating, verbalizing, making sure he is going through his audibles,” Cristobal explained. “Any check, any adjustment, protections, meeting with the offensive line coach, meeting with the coordinator at length daily.”
Cristobal’s comments reflect not just excitement about Beck’s physical recovery, but about the leadership and preparation he's already showing. His commitment to the mental side of the game may be exactly what the Hurricanes need as they try to reclaim national relevance.
“Every possible minute we could grab with him to continue the progression of this while the rest of his body progresses is invaluable. So that's what we're doing,” Cristobal said.
If Beck continues progressing ahead of schedule and gels with the system, Miami could become one of the most dangerous teams in the ACC again this year.
