Miami senior running back Mark Fletcher was asked at ACC Media Day why he stayed with the Canes after building value for himself in the transfer portal and NIL era.

Fletcher's answer was simple: "I just follow my heart." He also said the chance to play his true senior season at Miami was something he could not turn down.

Mark Fletcher shows that loyalty that still matters in portal era

Fletcher is one of the best returning running backs in the ACC, a South Florida product and one of the clearest examples of Miami developing and retaining a high school signee at a time when roster movement can reshape a team every year. He could have gotten a bag in the portal, and he could have tried his luck in the NFL draft.

Miami has built aggressively through the portal under Mario Cristobal, and that approach has helped the Hurricanes reload at quarterback, receiver and several spots across the roster. Fletcher represents the other side of roster building that is just as important.

Mark Fletcher also wants to make sure Miami is focused on 2026

He also sounds like a player who understands that last season does not carry over automatically.

Fletcher said Miami's leaders, including himself, Darian Mensah and Mohamed Toure, have to make sure the new players understand that "last year is last year." That is the correct message for a team coming off a national title game appearance with a different quarterback, new receivers and a schedule that will not leave much room for a slow start.

Fletcher rushed for 514 yards and five touchdowns as a true freshman in 2023, and then followed with 607 rushing yards and nine touchdowns as a sophomore in 2024. He broke through in 2025, rushing for 1,192 yards and 12 touchdowns. He now sits seventh in program history with 2,313 career rushing yards entering his senior season.
