Miami added another blue-chip piece to its 2027 baseball class, landing a verbal commitment from Brophy College Prep shortstop Dreson Ethier of Phoenix.
Ethier, a 6-foot-1, 160-pound middle infielder, checks boxes across the board for projection and present skill. He is a primary shortstop with advanced footwork, soft hands and the arm to stay on the left side. He also clocks in at 6.70 in the 60-yard dash. Prep Baseball Report's Arizona staff has him No. 6 in the state and No. 174 nationally in its May 2025 rankings update.
This pledge continues a busy fall on the trail for J.D. Arteaga's staff and deepens a 2027 group that has leaned into the state of Florida while selectively adding high-upside pieces from out of state.

The name might sound familiar to Major League Baseball fans. Ethier is the son of former Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier. Ethier was a productive, clutch-hitting outfielder who spent his entire 12-year MLB career with the Los Angeles Dodgers (2006–17). A Phoenix native, he began at Chandler-Gilbert Community College before transferring to Arizona State, where he hit .371 across two seasons and became a second-round pick of the Oakland Athletics in 2003.
He debuted on May 2, 2006, hit .308 as a rookie (fifth in NL ROY voting), and quickly cemented himself as a lineup regular. His peak years included a Silver Slugger in 2009 — when he hit 31 homers, 106 RBI and authored six walk-off hits, four of them walk-off homers — and back-to-back All-Star selections in 2010 and 2011. He added a Gold Glove in 2011 and ran a 30-game hitting streak from April 2 to May 6, the second-longest in franchise history.
He retired in 2018 and finished with a .285/.359/.463 line (1,367 hits, 303 doubles, 162 HR, 687 RBI).
