The Miami Hurricanes are back in the NCAA Tournament field as the No. 2 seed in the Gainesville Regional, opening against No. 3 seed Troy at 6 p.m. Friday on ACC Network. No. 8 national seed Florida hosts the regional and opens against Rider earlier in the day.

For Miami, this is another postseason opportunity, but it also comes with the weight of a history that still defines the program.

Miami baseball's NCAA Tournament history

Miami's tournament history starts with Ron Fraser turning the Hurricanes into a national baseball power.

Fraser guided Miami to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1971. The Hurricanes won their first tournament game 4-3 over Georgia Tech, then were later eliminated.

From there, Miami became one of the most consistent postseason programs in college baseball. The Hurricanes made it to the NCAA Tournament for 44 consecutive years from 1973 through 2016. Miami has 25 College World Series appearances.

Miami's place in college baseball history is built around its four national championships in 1982, 1985, 1999 and 2001.

The first title came in 1982, when the Hurricanes reached Omaha after sweeping through the Atlantic Regional in Coral Gables. That run included one of the sport's most famous plays, "The Grand Illusion," a hidden-ball trick against Wichita State that helped Miami win 4-3 before eventually beating the Shockers 9-3 for the program's first national championship.

Miami won it again in 1985. The Hurricanes beat Texas 10-6 to win its second national title in four seasons.

Jim Morris brought the program back to the top in 1999. Miami beat Florida State 6-5 in the national championship game and finished 50-13 after sweeping through nine NCAA Tournament games.

The Hurricanes added their fourth title in 2001, dominating Stanford 12-1 in the championship game. Miami won 28 of their final 31 games during that closing stretch.

The history is elite, but the recent years have been tougher.

Miami's NCAA Tournament streak ended in 2017, when the Hurricanes were left out of the field for the first time since 1972. Miami also missed the tournament in 2018 before returning in 2019, and the 2020 season was cut short because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Hurricanes made regionals again in 2021, 2022 and 2023, but they could not push through to Omaha. After missing the tournament in 2024, Miami won the Hattiesburg Regional in 2025, beating top-seeded Southern Miss 5-4 in a winner-take-all game.

Miami enters the NCAA Tournament 38-18 overall and will attempt to return to former glory.
