Florida State's 2027 recruiting class took a hit on Sunday when four-star safety Mekhi Williams decommitted from the Seminoles, stripping Mike Norvell's class of its top commit and its only nationally ranked commitment in 247Sports' own rankings.

Williams, a 6-foot-2, 160-pound safety from Lennard High School in Ruskin, Florida, had been committed to Florida State since March 2025. His exit leaves the Seminoles with seven commitments and the No. 49 class nationally per 247Sports.

It also puts major pressure on Norvell when Miami has already built one of the strongest 2027 classes in the country.

4-star Mekhi Williams backs away from Florida State

Williams announced his decommitment with a statement thanking Florida State's staff and explaining that the decision came after a family conversation.

"This decision wasn't easy, but God has a plan for me and I know this is the best decision for myself," Williams wrote. "After careful consideration, and a long talk with my family, I have decided to decommit and will not be attending Florida State."

Williams also thanked the coaches for the opportunity and said he wished the program success.

247Sports ranks Williams as the No. 107 overall player, No. 10 safety and No. 10 player in Florida.

Miami's lead over FSU keeps growing

The contrast with Miami is hard to ignore. The Hurricanes have 17 commitments and the No. 3 class nationally in the 247Sports team rankings. Miami's class is led by top-20 overall prospects Donte Wright, Israel Abrams and Nick Lennear, with Jatori Williams, Ai'King Hall, Aroson Randle Jr., Noah Glover, Jaylyn Jones and others adding more talent behind them.

Miami is stacking ranked players at premium positions while Florida State just lost the only nationally ranked player on its board. If there was ever an offseason snapshot of how far apart the two programs look right now, Sunday was it.
