This one has to sting a little for Georgia fans.

Miami head coach Mario Cristobal has suffered a few losses on the recruiting trail after a hot streak in the month of April, but he is still finding wins as well. Just last week, Cristobal was able to stick it to Georgia and head coach Kirby Smart by slipping five-star recruit Donte Wright.

It was a huge flip for the Hurricanes, one that helped Miami move up to No. 9 in the 247Sports team recruiting rankings and No. 5 in Rivals team recruiting rankings. Shortly after flipping from the Bulldogs to the Hurricanes, Wright gave a little insight as to why he chose Miami over Georgia.

"There are a lot of people who are going to say I took the bag or whatever," Wright said in an interview with Rivals. "If I’m being real with you, I could’ve gone somewhere else and taken a way crazier bag and surprised everyone."

Donte Wright chose less money in flipping his commitment from Miami

In the quote above about Wright's decision to flip to Miami, he didn't specifically name the school that was offering him more money. It could have been Georgia giving him that kind of money, or it could have been another school, which seems like the likelier option.

The key here is that Wright didn't care about the money when it came to Miami, and clearly chose the school for what it is rather than getting more money elsewhere. Now, that doesn't mean the Hurricanes aren't giving him a nice NIL deal because they most likely are, but Wright made it clear he could have gotten more somewhere else.

This is a huge win for Miami as Wright is the No. 9 player in the 2027 recruiting class, the No. 2 cornerback in the class, and the No. 1 player in the state of California, according to 247Sports Composite recruiting rankings.

Mario Cristobal is heading into the heart of the 2027 recruiting cycle on a high note

Miami now has 11 commits in the Class of 2027, and with the heart of the 2027 recruiting cycle coming up, Cristobal should be feeling really good about where Miami stands. Cristobal has been able to recruit very well on both sides of the ball, one of the biggest coming from five-star quarterback Israel Abrams.

The Hurricanes have their quarterback of the future, one who can sit back and learn from watching Darian Mensah ball out this season for Miami. Cristobal has also recruited very well in the state of Florida, making sure in-state guys stay close to home.
