Miami gets more good news In its effort to land reclassified 5-star ATH Amir Sears

The Miami Hurricanes' 2027 class was already great and in about 48 hours it could become even greater.

Amir Sears, the top-rated athlete in the 2028 class, has made the decision to reclassify to the 2027 class and will announce his commitment on July 31. Sears attends Columbus High School in Miami, the Alma mater of Mario Cristobal and that connection has put the Hurricanes in a prime spot to add another big-time recruit to the class.

Two 247Sports writers have made their predictions for Miami to receive Sears' commitment when he makes his announcement Friday on the CBS Sports Network HQ channel at 5 p.m. ET.

The crystal ball predictions come from Gaby Urrutia, the staff writer for the 247Sports Miami site (InsideTheU) and Zach Blostein, who covers recruiting in the state of Florida for the network.

Miami is trending for top local recruit Amir Sears

Sears was a five-star prospect in the 2028 class. 247Sports had him rated as the No. 1 athlete in the country and the top overall prospect in their rankings. He was the No. 2 overall prospect in the composite rankings. Rivals/On3 also has Sears rated as a five-star and their adjusted rankings for reclassification have him as the 13th-best prospect in the nation. The network's predictor gives Miami a 98.3 percent chance of his commitment.

Miami's recruitment of Sears has been a two-year process. He attended one of the Hurricanes' Junior-Day events in July 2024 and Cristobal extended him his first offer. Since then, Sears has been back to the campus several times and was in attendance for last year's win over Notre Dame.

Since the start of 2025, the offers have come in from nearly every top program in the country. Ohio State, Indiana, Alabama, Florida, Louisville, Georgia and Penn State were among the major programs that tried to get in on Sears' recruitment from the ground floor.

Sears is a dynamic two-way player that could project as a shut-down corner or an outside receiver. Listed at 6-foot-1, 180-pounds, he has the size to be exceptional at either position.

Adding Sears would give the Hurricanes another five-star prospect in the 2027 recruiting cycle. Donte Wright is currently the highest-rated player in the class at No. 6 overall (No. 1 cornerback) in the 247Sports Composite. The other five-star recruits are quarterback Israel Abrams, wide receiver Nick Lennear and edge rusher Jaiden Bryant. 

Of the 20 commits currently in the 2027 class, 15 of them are considered blue-chip prospects with ratings of four-stars and above. Eight of the pledges are within 100 miles of the Coral Gables campus, giving this group a significant local presence. Cristobal wants nothing more than for Sears to raise that total to nine.
