Miami is again positioned to be one of the most aggressive programs in the quarterback market. NFL draft analyst Matt Miller wrote on X that "word on the transfer portal streets is that Miami is ready to break the bank for a QB." The post instantly fanned speculation about how Mario Cristobal and the Hurricanes plan to approach the winter window after the conclusion of the current season.
Word on the transfer portal streets is that Miami is ready to break the bank for a QB. Gonna be very interesting to see who they get
— Matt Miller (@nfldraftscout) November 6, 2025
The comments from Miller are extra pertinent becuase they coincide with Todd McShay saying on "The McShay Show" that multiple scouts expect South Carolina's LaNorris Sellers to return to school and, if he moves, he flagged Miami as a potential destination. He described the situation as typical scouting-circle chatter, but with both reports now revealed, the idea of Miami going to get another QB in the transfer portal might just have some weight.

Miami's transfer portal track record at QB
The Hurricanes' recent moves at QB — as well as the success at the position — makes the rumor plausible. Miami landed Cam Ward out of the portal for 2024 and he authored a historic season, setting single-season program records and elevating himself into the No. 1 overall pick.
That momentum carried into January, when former Georgia starter Carson Beck transferred to Miami after initially eyeing the NFL. The Hurricanes invested a lot of money into Beck, making him the highest paid player in the NIL era. Despite some recent performances that have clouded early-season success for Beck, Miami's track record is solid and they would be an attractive landing spot for many top QB's across the nation. That is of course if they are in the market for a signal caller.
The current QB room behind Carson Beck
As of the 2025 season, Beck is Miami's starter. Redshirt sophomore Emory Williams is the No. 2, with freshmen Luke Nickel, Judd Anderson, and Joe Borchers (redshirt sophomore) filling out the rest of the room.
The idea of grabbing another QB in the portal could be tricky. If it is 1-2 straight years of QB rentals, that's fine. With the younger QB's waiting in the wings it's a "best of both worlds" situation: the younger players get to sit back, learn, and develop while the team remains in "win now" mode. But, doing something like that three years in a row is a risk. Underclassman quarterbacks could feel compelled to transfer and recruits would question if they would ever get a fair shot.
Miami also runs the risk of never truly seeing what they have at the position. Who knows, they could be passing up on a 2-3 year elite starter in that case. It's a short-term position that has the chance to pay off big, but doing it multiple years in a row would most likely hurt the program's future plans.
Quarterbacks to watch
Below is quick list of some QB's who could be on the move. None of these players have entered or even shown the interest in hopping into the portal. But, they could be on the move due to potential coaching changes, looking for a better situation, or wanting to take the next step to elevate draft stock, etc.
- CJ Bailey (NC State)
- Byrum Brown (USF)
- Drew Mestemaker (North Texas)
- Colton Joseph (Old Dominion)
- LaNorris Sellers (South Carolina)
With a recent run that includes landing Ward and Beck, Miami has the track record and, per Miller and other sources, this could be something to keep an eye on. Whether that yields a splash depends on who actually becomes available in December and how things end this season.
