Miami baseball just scored a massive recruiting win: Jacob Lombard, one of the nation's premier 2026 prospects, has committed to the Hurricanes.

Baseball America calls Lombard a potential top-10 pick in the 2026 MLB Draft and currently ranks him No. 7 overall in the class (No. 3 among high-school players, behind fellow shortstops Grady Emerson and one other).

Lombard is a 6-3 shortstop from Miami’s Gulliver Prep with twitchy athleticism and advanced middle-infield actions. Perfect Game lists him at 6-3 and 185 pounds with a best-in-class PG grade (10) and a 6.11 sixty.

Lombard is the son of Detroit Tigers bench coach George Lombard Sr. and the younger brother of Yankees top prospect George Lombard Jr.

The caveat to a commitment like this is obvious. Players with the profile of Lombard often draw early-round MLB money and with him being a projected top-10 pick, he almost certainly will. Whether Lombard ever enrolls will depend on how the 2026 draft unfolds, but getting his name on a commitment list keeps Miami in the conversation for one of the sport's most coveted prep shortstops.

More on his brother, George Lombard Jr.

Lombard Jr. is the Yankees’ top infield prospect — a 2023 first-rounder (No. 26 overall) out of Miami's Gulliver Prep who signed for $3.3 million and is the son of Tigers bench coach George Lombard Sr. In 2025 he opened at High-A Hudson Valley, torched the level (.329/.496/.488 with 11 steals in 24 games) and earned a May promotion to Double-A Somerset, where he also appeared in the All-Star Futures Game in July. For the season he logged 473 at-bats across the two stops and posted a .235/.367/.748 OPS line with 9 homers, 49 RBI and 35 steals. MLB Pipeline has rated him the Yankees' No. 1 prospect (and previously No. 44 overall in MLB).
