It all comes down to this... Although the Miami Hurricanes are a sizable underdog to top-seeded Indiana in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game, at least it will be at home. Miami has a seasoned starting quarterback of its own in Carson Beck, he will be off to the NFL as soon as this one is over, just like Miami native and the Heisman winner for the Hoosiers in Fernando Mendoza.
So with former Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt heading to LSU and former Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson off to the NFL, where is Miami to turn? Well, Gaby Urrutia of 247Sports believes the best option out there is none other than Husan Longstreet. The former five-star out of Corona, California spent last season at USC. With four years of eligibility left, he is so worth the risk.
No matter what happens next season, Miami has curried enough favor with its entire rabid fanbase. Head coach Mario Cristobal is not going anywhere. Neither are his top two assistants in offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson and defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman. As long as Dawson is on board with the idea of Longstreet coming in and taking over for Beck, we all should be in favor of this.
Landing a transfer portal quarterback who is so green would be a total departure for Miami of late.
Why Husan Longstreet may be the perfect transfer portal QB for Miami
Although this is a new era of college football, teams like Miami cannot be building up its roster with one marquee transfer portal player after another. This is not a sustainable model for perpetuating excellence. Under Cristobal's watch, Miami has done a fantastic job of recruiting at the high school level. This is why they can be so aggressive in the transfer portal, because they have this foundation.
What we are getting at is having to rebuild an entirely new team every year can be quite exhausting. You may win more than you do not in the portal, but when you mess up, it can put you out of work in a hurry. In short, Miami is too good for this. The Hurricanes can build up their program in a multitude of ways because it is a traditional power with such illustrious history on its side. It can attract new stars.
And that is kind of what makes Longstreet so intriguing. He could back up Jayden Maiava for another season at USC, but what difference would that make? He is probably ready for an honest shot at a starting job, one with a strong supporting cast around him. Miami checks that box better than what Tennessee has presently, or the idea of LSU that Leavitt is willingly signing up for. So make it happen!
If Longstreet comes over and hits, Miami will not have to look for a quarterback in the portal for years!
