Indiana defensive coordinator Bryant Haines won the Broyles Award, edging out Miami defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman for one of college football's top assistant-coaching honors.

The Frank and Barbara Broyles Award, created in 1996, recognizes the nation's top assistant coach. This year's finalists included Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, Haines, Hetherman, Ohio State defensive coordinator Matt Patricia and Texas Tech defensive coordinator Shiel Wood.

Miami DC Corey Hetherman does not win Broyles Award

Indiana rode an aggressive defense to an undefeated national championship season, and the Hoosiers finished near the top of the FBS in scoring defense, rushing defense, total defense and third-down defense.

Indiana ranked No. 2 nationally in scoring defense and run defense, No. 4 in total defense, and No. 8 in third-down defense, while piling up an FBS-best 128 tackles for loss and 45 sacks.

For Miami, Hetherman finishing behind Haines is less of a knock on the Hurricanes and more of a reminder of how hard it is to beat out the coordinator of an undefeated national champion.

Hetherman was named a Broyles Award finalist after emerging as the winner of a weeklong fan vote to secure one of the final five spots. Hetherman's defense allowed just 13.8 points per game, 86.8 rushing yards per game, 277.8 total yards per game, and registered 2.83 sacks per game.

Hetherman arrived from Minnesota, where he served as defensive coordinator in 2024, before taking over the Hurricanes' defense in 2025.

Losing an award like this could light a fire into the defense as the program sits in the offseason. Miami fell to Indiana in the CFP championship game and the results from the Broyles Award is just another reminder for how much that game stings. The Hurricanes had an opportunity to win the game late but couldn't capitalize on offense. Miami will hope that they can use this as extra motivation for when spring ball comes around.
