The Miami Hurricanes have made another addition to their secondary with the commitment of Keionte Scott, a versatile defensive back transferring from Houston. Scott, who previously played for Auburn, may be one of the final pieces added from the portal to the Hurricanes' defense. Part of his commitment must be attributed to his connection to Canes DB coach Zac Etheridge.

Scott, who transferred to Houston earlier this year from Auburn, played in 33 career games for the Tigers. During his time at Auburn, he totaled 115 tackles, six tackles for loss, and scored a punt return touchdown. Scott’s entry to the portal came in the NCAA's 48-hour extension window. Clearly something went wrong during his time in Houston for him to enter the portal right after the spring.

In addition to defense, Scott made a significant impact on special teams. He led the SEC in punt return average in 2023, recording a 14.8-yard average and scoring a 74-yard punt return touchdown against Arkansas. His ability to change the game's momentum through special teams could bring an interesting dynamic to Miami as they also added All-American kick returner Keelan Marion from BYU.

Scott's decision to join Miami reunites him with defensive backs coach Etheridge, under whom he previously played for at Auburn. Scott's familiarity with Etheridge's coaching style and expectations will help him assimilate into the defense despite missing the spring.

Miami's secondary has experienced some turnover, with players like Zaquan Patterson and Emmanuel Karnley entering the transfer portal. Scott's arrival addresses this void and his ability to play multiple positions provides the coaching staff with flexibility. Mario Cristobal and company also secured a commitment from Tennessee's JaKobe Thomas in the secondary.

As Miami continues to build its roster, college football analysts have taken notice of their efforts. The Canes are routinely being ranked in Way-Too-Early Top 25's by the likes of Joel Klatt, On3 and more.
