Miami missed on one of its more intriguing national defensive line targets Thursday when four-star South Houston defensive lineman Xavier Muhammad committed to Michigan.

Muhammad chose the Wolverines over Notre Dame and Miami. The 6-foot-5, 275-pound defensive lineman is ranked as the No. 8 defensive lineman in the 2027 Rivals300.

Muhammad has a Rivals Industry Ranking of No. 102 overall, No. 10 among defensive linemen and No. 12 in Texas.

Miami misses on blue-chip defensive lineman

Muhammad made his first trip to Ann Arbor in April, and that visit pushed Michigan up his list. He spoke highly of the campus atmosphere, the coaching staff, the player interaction and the resources available to athletes on and off the field. He is the fourth blue-chip prospect to commit to the Wolverines this month.

Muhammad had been expected to announce later in the summer, with his announcement date originally set for July 3. Instead, Michigan closed early after the April visit and is now expected to keep him in the fold.

Muhammad was one of the Houston-area defensive line targets that Miami defensive tackles coach Damione Lewis had spent significant time around. Muhammad had also visited Miami in the spring after attending a home game last fall.

Muhammad recorded 22 tackles, six tackles for loss, three sacks and eight quarterback pressures for South Houston in 2025.

He also averaged 15.1 points and 12.5 rebounds as a sophomore basketball player after averaging 8.9 points and 11.2 rebounds as a freshman. In addition to that, he logged a 47-foot-5 shot put mark as a freshman.

The Hurricanes still have one of the best classes in the country. The class already includes blue-chip defensive lineman Ezekiel Ayangbile and Key West defensive lineman Josh Johnson.

Now Miami has to keep working on the rest of its defensive front recruiting board. David Folorunsho remains one of the bigger names to watch nationally, and the Hurricanes are still in the running for several defensive line/edge targets in the 2027 cycle.
