Miami had to wait out a long night in Gainesville, then had to answer one last push from Troy after midnight. The Hurricanes pulled away for a 10-5 win over the Trojans in their NCAA Gainesville Regional opener at Condron Family Ballpark.
The win moved Miami into the winner's bracket and set up the game everyone in South Florida had been watching for since the bracket was announced. The Hurricanes will face host Florida at 8 p.m. Saturday after the Gators survived Rider 8-7 on Brendan Lawson's walk-off home run in the first game of the regional.

Miami defeats Troy 10-5
Vance Sheahan opened the scoring with a solo home run to left field, giving the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead. Miami kept the pressure on after Jake Ogden was hit by a pitch and Max Galvin reached on a throwing error. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position, and Derek Williams delivered the big swing of the inning with a three-run homer to left center.
Just like that, Miami had a 4-0 lead and it looked like it would be a comfortable night. That did not happen as Troy fought back quickly and made Miami work for everything.
Sean Darnell drove in Troy's first run with an RBI single in the fourth inning. Blake Cavill followed with a two-run double in the fifth, cutting Miami's lead to 4-3.
Rob Evans gave Miami five innings in the start, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out four.
Jack Durso gave Miami two scoreless innings after Evans. He allowed one hit, struck out two and gave the Hurricanes room to breathe.
Miami added an insurance run in the seventh when Williams walked, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a throwing error by Troy catcher Jimmy Janicki. That made it 5-3.
Troy opened the eighth with back-to-back walks against Lyndon Glidewell. Alonzo Alvarez helped quiet the inning briefly with one of the biggest defensive plays of the game, throwing behind Janicki at second for a key pickoff.
But, Drew Nelson then followed with a two-run homer to right field, tying the game at five. Without Alvarez's throw, Troy would have had a chance to take the lead on the same swing.
Miami went to the bottom of the eighth tied and took control.
Ogden doubled to right center with one out. Galvin followed with an RBI double down the right-field line to put Miami back in front 6-5. Troy intentionally walked Williams, then Alex Sosa walked to load the bases. Alvarez singled home another run, Dylan Dubovik added a sacrifice fly and Brandon DeGoti capped the inning with a two-run double to left center. Miami scored five runs in the eighth.
Williams finished 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs, three runs and two walks. Alvarez went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a walk while also delivering the defensive play that helped Miami survive.
Sheahan went 2-for-4 with a homer and a walk. Sosa added two hits and a walk, while DeGoti came off the bench and delivered the double that put the game out of reach.
Miami finished with 12 hits and drew seven walks. Troy had nine hits, but the Trojans also committed three errors, and those mistakes helped Miami create extra chances.
Glidewell earned the win after recording the final six outs. He allowed two runs on one hit and struck out three.
Miami gets a shot at Florida
Florida's opener against Rider was far from easy. The Gators blew a 4-0 lead, fell behind after Rider's six-run eighth inning, retook the lead, gave it back again in the ninth and finally won on Lawson's walk-off homer.
If Miami beats Florida, the Hurricanes move to the regional final needing one win to advance. If the Canes lose, they drop into the elimination side of the bracket with a long Sunday ahead.
