Miami working a 5-star Kemon Spell flip should have Kirby Smart ready to burst

Who said the Miami Hurricanes were done with the 2027 recruiting class? The numbers might have suggested that Mario Cristobal was ready to shift focus solely to the top targets n the 2028 class, but who's to say the Hurricanes staff can't do both?

Cristobal isn't done, and he's targeting some of the top prospects in the class. That includes the flip prospects we already know about, like five-star edge rusher DJ Jacobs and five-star offensive tackle Mark Matthews, but there's another top-end prospect on the board — five-star running back Kemon Spell.

Kemon Spell flip would send Miami's class to another stratosphere

I can hear all the Miami haters now..." How many five-stars does Mario Cristobal need?"

The answer: All of them.

And that seems to be the goal for this staff with this class. Striking while the iron is hot is one thing, but Cristobal wants to let every top prospect that isn't committed to Miami know that the Hurricanes are on fire and if they want to be part of a historic run for championships, it's time to jump on.

Here's the other fact: Miami has been in the market for another running back. The Hurricanes already have four-star running back Ty Keys committed in the class, but the staff would love to have a second back. That's why there has also been an extended push for Myson Johnson-Cook, who was expected to commit to the Hurricanes before Auburn came with a big deal he couldn't refuse.

Spell, out of McKeesport, Pennsylvania, is listed at 5-foot-9 and 205 pounds. He committed to Georgia in February over Miami, Penn State and Notre Dame. Spell is rated as the No. 1 running back in the country and the sixth-best overall recruit by 247Sports Composite. He's been offered by nearly every top program in the country, with Ohio State, Michigan, Oregon, USC and Nebraska also being among the schools that Spell was considering during his recruitment. 

Miami offered Spell in May 2025, and he took an unofficial visit to Coral Gables last season, but travel issues kept him from attending a game. The next step for Cristobal is to see if he can get Spell on campus for a game or an in-season official visit. Adding Spell to the 2027 group would almost guarantee Miami the No. 1-ranked recruiting class that it should already have. 

This isn't the first time that there have been rumors about Spell reconsidering his commitment to the Bulldogs, but he tried to quiet that noise in May. However, it's getting loud again, and eventually you have to wonder if Cristobal isn't ready to pull off another recruiting coup.
