Several days ago, ESPN released their top 100 newcomers of the upcoming college football season. It was a list compiled mostly of transfers and a few incoming freshmen. There are Miami Hurricanes all over the list with Darian Mensah and Damon Wilson II in the top team and offensive tackle Jackson Cantwell as one of two true freshmen in the top 20.Â
But one player not on the list that could prove to be one of Miami's best moves in the transfer portal is defensive back Conrad Hussey. It's been a rough couple of years for Hussey, but there are a few signs that point to a potential bounce back for the former four-star prospect from Broward County.
Why Conrad Hussey could be a major surprise for Miami in 2026?
Hussey is still a good football player, and he plays his best when he's surrounded by other good football players. That's what happened in 2023 when Hussey won the FSU team award for the Defensive Rookie of the Year. He wasn't surrounded by good football players in 2024, when the Seminoles went in the tank, and then in the spring and summer of 2025, Hussey was being targeted by that coaching staff. Eventually they ran him off because Mike Norvell doesn't know how to coach, develop and motivate good football players.
Conrad Hussey sorry you had to play for that dumpster fire program.

Mario Cristobal, however, knows how to manage good football players and Hussey will be surrounded by a team full of guys that are talented and have a desire to win. The atmosphere Hussey was in at FSU in 2024 was toxic and full of losers. Would it have been nice for him to have a bounce-back season at Oregon State? Sure. But that move out happened quickly and it was situation created out of desperation on both sides. Hussey also had a hand injury that stemmed from an altercation with an FSU coach that led to his dismissal there.
Hussey's lack of playing time last year meant that he was a pretty cheap portal acquisition for the Hurricanes. Miami is so deep in the secondary it made sense to take a flier on Hussey because there is very little downside. Either Hussey will be the player that he was a few years ago or he'll be stuck on the bench, but I believe fans are going to be surprised with what Hussey will bring as a reserve safety/nickel and on special teams. Barring injuries it would be hard to see Hussey cracking the starting lineup, at least not early in the season, but can the former St. Thomas Aquinas product make the most out of 15+ snaps a game on defense and a role on special teams coverage? I thinkl so.Â
Cristobal isn't giving anything concrete to Hussey. He's not promising playing time. He didn't bring him in to be a starter or even a first option in sub packages. But he's offering an opportunity. Hussey has a chance to go out, bust his butt and prove that the player he was a couple of years ago wasn't a mirage. The culture at Miami should be one to motivate Hussey to be his best, and I'm banking on that happening.Â
