The Steelers released former Miami cornerback Daryl Porter Jr. on Friday in their first wave of cuts, and no team has claimed him off waivers as of Monday afternoon.
Pittsburgh waived 11 players, including Tamon Lynum, Jaylon Guilbeau, Jack Henderson and Brandon Hill. Pittsburgh kept six cornerbacks on the first 53: Jalen Ramsey, Joey Porter Jr., Jamel Dean, Asante Samuel Jr., Brandin Echols and Daylen Everette.

The Steelers signed him on June 11 after the Buffalo Bills waived him. Buffalo had originally signed him as an undrafted free agent out of Miami in 2025, cut him in July, then brought him back on the practice squad and a reserve/futures deal after he spent last fall in Pittsburgh. He appeared in one regular-season game for the Steelers. He had four snaps (one defensive, three on special teams) in a December win at Detroit, then was released again before Buffalo re-signed him.
Porter made a tackle in Thursday's preseason loss to Buffalo and had two stops against the Jets the week before. He is off the 53-man roster and, unless a claim surfaces late, looking at a practice squad.
He has shown that he can hang around on NFL rosters, but it is certainly an unfortunate setback for a very talented football player. Porter has now had two stints with both the Bills and Steelers. If the pattern keeps up, he should be going to Buffalo soon, but obviously there hasn't been any indication of that.
Porter started his college career at West Virginia, transferred to Miami in 2022 and started for two seasons in Coral Gables. Across college he finished with 108 tackles, 18 passes defended and one interception. His father, Daryl Porter Sr., was a sixth-round pick of the Steelers in 1997 and later played safety for the Bills.
