QB commit CJ Cypher was on the money Friday night, but will he stay in the 2029 class?

Whether CJ Cypher ends out in the 2029 recruiting class or reclassifies to the 2028 class, it's clear that the Miami Hurricanes have another big-time player coming into the fold at quarterback.

Cypher took the field this past Friday for the season opener with Carrolton High School in Georgia, and he was on fire, throwing for 289 yards and four touchdowns in a 55-7 win over Rome High School. The sophomore is rated as the top quarterback in the 2029 class and committed to the Hurricanes over the summer, giving the program quarterback commits in the next three classes.

Cypher has had a whirlwind of a past few months in recruiting and visits before committing to Miami in June and winning the MVP Award in the UA Next S7VNS tournament at IMG Academy a few weeks later. But now that he's back on the gridiron at his high school, the 6-foot-2, 200-pound prospect is showing everyone that he gets it done when the pads get put on.

"He has the natural arm strength. He throws with touch. He throws a very good deep ball. He makes throws outside the pocket. So, everything you look for in that elite quarterback at his age, in 2029, he checked those boxes Friday night," Rivals/On3 Director of Recruiting Chad Simmons said.

If you look at the video clips, Cypher immediately shows you all the tools and that's why Mario Cristobal and Shannon Dawson so aggressively worked to get his pledge despite being over two years away from graduation. But there's also a chance that the timetable moves up by a year.

The talk around the Cypher camp is that a reclassification to 2028 is a big possibility. That would change some aspects of Miami's future plans as the Hurricanes already have Knox Annis committed for the 2028 class, and it's highly doubtful that they will be able to hold on to both players. 

Cypher is keeping things close to the vest right now, but there's no question that the possibility is on the table and Simmons says we probably won't get any clarity on his future until after the season.

"I think the plan is not to be a distraction this fall. Go try to win a state championship at Carrolton and then make that final season [after the season]. Everything on my side [suggests] that he ends up in the 2028 class. I just don't think he wants to announce that right now and be a distraction for his team and his teammates," Simmons added.

Until the answers come, it's time to enjoy Cypher's ability to light up opposing secondaries this season and when he makes a decision on his future, we'll see how that plays out with his commitment to Miami.
