When Brendan Sorsby entered the transfer portal in December, there were reports that the Miami Hurricanes were among the first to try to sign him from Cincinnati and made a very competitive NIL offer. Sorsby eventually chose Texas Tech and the Hurricanes were able to grab Darian Mensah from Duke.

At the time, Sorsby eliminating the Hurricanes was a disappointment, but with Monday's news that Sorsby has checked himself into a 30-day rehab to treat a gambling addiction, it looks like Miami dodged a major bullet.

ESPN's Pete Thamel further reports that Sorsby bet on Indiana football games in 2022 when he was going through his redshirt season. NCAA rules state that if a player is found betting on their own sport at another school, they could lose eligibility or face a significant suspension. Obviously, this could have a huge impact on Texas Tech's upcoming season. The Red Raiders have a lot of money invested in Sorsby, reportedly over $4 million, and if he is suspended for any significant amount of time, their playoff chances would reduce drastically.

"History would tell us that it would be very difficult for Brendan Sorsby to regain eligibility.," Thamel said. "The NCAA has a strict rule for athletes, and even staffers, that they cannot bet on college or professional sports. Recent history would indicate they have enforced that very strictly."

There's plenty left to unpack and Texas Tech could very well have to figure out how to manage a season without their quarterback. It also shows how delicate things can be for programs that are making big acquisitions in the portal. Texas Tech is giving Sorsby a very healthy NIL deal to be their starting quarterback, much like Miami is doing with Mensah. It's a risk and while most fans only think of the injury risk, there's the potential of something like this happening that leaves a program without a major piece of the roster.

Whether Sorsby will be allowed to play this season or not remains to be seen, but Mario Cristobal and Miami have to feel like they potentially dodged a bullet and ended up with the better player in the process.
