Florida has never lacked star power, and the debate over the state's biggest athlete brand has recently made the rounds on social media.
The candidates come from every corner of Florida sports. Some have championships. some have global name recognition and others are younger stars whose rise has turned them into the face of a program, a city or an entire sport.
Marketability comes down to merchandise, sponsorships, national exposure, local connection and whether an athlete can make fans care beyond the games themselves. Florida's best cases come from every level of the sports world.
Lionel Messi: Inter Miami
Lionel Messi has to be part of any conversation about Florida's biggest athlete brand. Inter Miami's captain is an eight-time Ballon d'Or winner, a World Cup champion and one of the most recognizable athletes on the planet.
His impact in South Florida goes beyond the field, but the on-field case remains strong too: Messi entered the 2026 World Cup with 90 goals and 51 assists in 104 appearances across all competitions for Inter Miami, while becoming the first back-to-back MLS MVP. He is also under contract with Inter Miami through the 2028 MLS season, which keeps one of global sports' biggest names tied to the state for years to come.
Travis Hunter: Jacksonville Jaguars
Hunter won the 2024 Heisman Trophy at Colorado as a two-way star, then became the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft after Jacksonville traded up for him. Hunter played at both wide receiver and cornerback during his rookie season, keeping the same two-way identity that made him such a polarizing prospect.
Hunter appeared on the NFLPA's year-end Top 50 Player Sales List, the league's verified measure of officially licensed player merchandise. He also has an adidas partnership and appeared in the brand's campaign with Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence (who also deserves a mention on this list).
The on-field sample remains incomplete after a knee injury ended his rookie season early. And the Jaguars have stated that he will primarily play corner in his second season. But the novelty, and fanbase, is still alive and well for the playoff Jags.
Baker Mayfield: Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Quarterbacks have a built-in edge in this conversation, and Baker Mayfield has spent three seasons carrying Tampa Bay's offense.
Mayfield threw for 3,693 yards and 26 touchdowns in 2025 and across his three seasons with the Buccaneers he has produced 12,237 passing yards and 95 touchdown passes. He also has helped Tampa Bay remain a relevant franchise after Tom Brady's retirement.
Mayfield is one of the quarterbacks featured in Netflix's third season of "Quarterback," which premieres July 14. The series follows players away from the field as well as through the season, placing him in front of an audience that can join his fandom next season.
Thomas Haugh: Florida Gators basketball
Haugh averaged 17.1 points as Florida's leading scorer, earned All-America honors from all four major selectors and was a first-team All-SEC player. The 6-foot-9 forward also helped Florida win the 2026 SEC regular-season championship after playing a key role on the Gators' 2025 national title team. Instead of entering the NBA Draft, Haugh returned for his senior season.
That decision gives him another full year at a program with championship expectations, a fan base that already knows his game and the chance to build on a resume that could make him a lottery pick.
Malachi Toney: Miami Hurricanes football
As a true freshman in 2025, Toney set Miami's single-season record with 109 receptions, while also putting up 1,211 receiving yards, 10 receiving touchdowns and 1,622 all-purpose yards. He was named ACC Rookie of the Year, first-team All-ACC receiver and an Associated Press second-team All-American.
Toney was also selected as one of the cover athletes for EA Sports College Football 27 alongside Oregon quarterback Dante Moore and Ole Miss running back Kewan Lacy.
Giannis Antetokounmpo: Miami Heat
The Heat's trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo throws the debate for a loop.
Antetokounmpo is a two-time NBA MVP, 10-time All-Star, NBA champion and Finals MVP. He has spent more than a decade as one of the league's defining players and has a Nike signature shoe line that is set to enter its eighth edition later this year.
Antetokounmpo will arrive with a level of global recognition that few athletes in any Florida market can match.
