As Miami’s spring football practices continue, cornerbacks coach Zac Etheridge didn’t hesitate when asked who’s stood out the most in his room. “Xavier Lucas has been the most consistent corner,” Etheridge told the media on Thursday.
Lucas, a 6-foot-2, 198-pound defensive back from Pompano Beach, Florida, began his career at the University of Wisconsin. During his freshman season in 2024, he appeared in 11 games, starting one, and recorded 18 tackles, one tackle for loss, one interception, and three pass breakups.
In January, Lucas transferred to Miami. The transfer process was complex, involving disputes over revenue-sharing agreements and transfer portal entries. Despite these challenges, Lucas has successfully joined the Hurricanes and has quickly integrated into the team.
Before his collegiate career, Lucas was a standout at American Heritage High School in Plantation, Florida. As a senior, he tallied 26 tackles and four interceptions, contributing to the team's 10-2 record and a No. 12 national ranking by MaxPreps. His performance earned him a four-star prospect rating from Rivals.
Coach Etheridge also praised his adaptability, noting, "He can make the checks at the corner position. You can put him at safety. He knows what to do." Lucas's commitment to film study and his eagerness to be coached have further distinguished him during practices.
Etheridge, who joined the Hurricanes’ staff this offseason after a successful run at Auburn, emphasized that while the cornerback competition is ongoing, Lucas’s ability to show up every day and execute consistently has made him hard to ignore.
Lucas will look to solidify his place on the depth chart during the rest of spring practice and into fall camp. With continued development, he could find himself potentially starting when the Hurricanes kick off their 2025 season and if his spring performance is any indication, Lucas is just getting started.
