5-star Amir Sears committing to Miami would give Mario Cristobal his recruiting Picasso

The Miami Hurricanes' stellar recruiting class of 2027 is ready to add another five-star talent.

Blue-chip athlete and top local recruit Amir Sears will announce his commitment on Friday at 5 p.m. on the CBS Sports Network HQ channel. Sears, who will play at Columbus High School this fall. The Hurricanes are heavily favored to land Sears' pledge, and it would give Mario Cristobal a fifth recruit with a five-star ranking in this class.

Before reclassifying into the 2027 class, Sears was rated as the top overall prospect in the country by 247Sports. After his re-ranking, Sears remains a five-star prospect. He is a dynamic two-way presence that could excel on either side of the ball. 

"He is a special, special talent. It doesn't matter if it's cornerback, safety, wide receiver, wildcat quarterback," 247Sports national recruiting analyst Tom Loy said. "It doesn't matter where he plays on the field; he's a playmaker in every sense of the word."

Amir Sears' commitment would put this Miami class over the top

If Sears gives the Hurricanes another five-star commitment, they have the No. 1 class in the country. I don't know what the "official" rankings will say and, frankly, I don't care. At a certain point, the high quality of the players in Miami's class has to overtake simple numbers. Yes, Texas A&M and Oregon have more players committed, but the Hurricanes have BETTER players committed.

No one can compete with that number of five-star prospects, all rated inside the top-20 prospects in the country, or the near-80 percent blue-chip hit rate. That was his first top-10 class.

We're seeing Cristobal at his absolute peak as a recruiter. He's rebuilt the Miami program in his image, from the coaching staff to the overall culture. Everything about the Hurricanes is exactly the way he wants it. 

The standard for recent Miami recruiting classes is the 2023 group. That class had Francis Mauigoa, Reuben Bain and Mark Fletcher. Any recruiting class in the near future will be compared to that group. The 2027 class hasn't even stepped on campus yet, but it almost seems too strong to fail.

Other schools are trying to disrupt Miami's dream

Sears' recruitment is pretty solidly in the Hurricanes' favor, but we still have about 24 hours to go, and a lot of things can happen in the final minutes before a decision is made. Michigan seems to be making some headway with Sears. LSU and Texas A&M have also been mentioned, and they love to throw their money around. 

But Sears wants to play for Miami. I'd venture to say one of the big reasons he is reclassifying is to play one season with Malachi Toney. That's also why I believe he'll start his career with Miami as a wide receiver before a decision is made to stay on offense or move into the secondary. Players like Sears are too good to keep on the sidelines, and you better believe that Cristobal isn't going to make that mistake.
