These recruiting storylines should have Miami fans psyched for the 2028 class

Mario Cristobal still has some work to do in the 2027 recruiting class with a major announcement from 5-star athlete Amir Sears scheduled for Friday and a few flip candidates that the Miami Hurricanes staff is still working on, like five-star edge prospect DJ Jacobs. 

But the Hurricanes already have a ton of positive momentum for the 2028 class after a strong offseason where many of the top targets were on campus. Two players, four-star offensive lineman Kweli Fielder and three-star quarterback Knox Annis, are already committed with more to come soon.

Here are some of the recruiting storylines that Miami fans should be following throughout the season:

5-star Amir Sears' reclassification changes everything

Sears was the No. 1 prospect in the country for the 2028 class according to 247Sports and even with his reclassification to the 2027 class, the blue-chip athlete retained his five-star status. The 247Sports Composite still has Sears as the top-rated athlete in the country and the 11th-best overall prospect. 

The elite recruit from Miami Columbus High School is widely expected to stay home and commit to the Hurricanes when he makes his announcement Friday. That would give Miami a fifth five-star player in the 2027 class.

Miami is out in front for 2028 elite duo from Jacksonville Bolles HS

Bolles has been a powerhouse program in Florida for as long as I can remember, but the school hasn't been known as a place where the Hurricanes have traditionally had a lot of recruiting success. Cristobal is looking to change that with 5-star edge rusher Asher Ghioto and four-star running back Xander Edwards. 

Both Ghioto and Edwards list Miami as their leader and decisions could be made sooner rather than later. Ghioto also has Texas A&M high on his list, and we know how big of a pain the Aggies and their oil money can be to recruit against. Edwards, a MaxPreps sophomore All-American, is one of the key targets for the Hurricanes staff as they look to restock the running back room for the future.

Miami will welcome some major out-of-state visitors this season

Cristobal and staff have done an excellent job with local recruiting, but they are not limiting themselves when it comes to landing top talent. Two of Cristobal's favorite areas to recruit are Chicago and Southern California, so it's no surprise that two big targets from those areas are planning visits to Coral Gables this fall.

Five-star edge rusher Kameron McGee is the new No. 1 prospect in the 2028 class and the Chicago native is scheduled to make a trip to Miami this season. The Hurricanes have made McGee's early top four along with Oregon, Georgia and Notre Dame. 

Blue-chip cornerback Jordan Hicks, who plays at Mission Viejo High School in Orange County, California, has already said that he'll be attending the Miami-FSU game on October 17. Hicks has the Hurricanes listed among his top eight finalists with Alabama, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Oregon, UCLA, USC, and Texas A&M also making the cut.

Training camp begins on Tuesday and the Hurricanes are going to be locked in on having a historic season, but don't think for a second that the coaching staff is taking a break from recruiting. Cristobal and company are already on the right path for another top recruiting class in 2028.
