A'mir Sears isn't going to waste any time getting started with the Miami Hurricanes.

The five-star athlete, who could be the National Player of the Year, has decided to enroll at Miami in January. Sears, who attends Christopher Columbus High School in Miami, reclassified to the 2027 class over the summer, and now he'll follow the same path as Malachi Toney.

Toney also left American Heritage School (Plantation, Florida) a year early and enrolled at Miami in January 2025. Before leaving high school, Toney played quarterback to lead the Patriots to a state championship. Sears will try to match those accomplishments before he becomes a full-time Miami Hurricane.

A'mir Sears wants to get to Miami as soon as possible

Sears still has some high school football left. Columbus is 9-1 and gearing up for the inaugural FHSAA Open Classification Playoffs, which takes the top eight teams in Florida to determine the state champion. Columbus is 9-1 and currently ranked No. 2 in the state behind St. Thomas Aquinas.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound two-way player continues to dominate each game as a wide receiver and a defensive back and each week there's a good chance that you'll see Sears trending on social media after making a play worthy of the Sportscenter Top 10.

When Sears arrives at the Greentree practice fields in Coral Gables, it's uncertain which side of the ball that he'll play, but it's good to have options. And there's no question that Sears has the potential to be elite at wide receiver or in the secondary.

Sears made his commitment to Miami in late July, and he's been solid to the Hurricanes from the time he made his declaration. As the Hurricanes recruiting class is going through some late movement, Mario Cristobal knows he can count on Sears to be solid.

Miami's 2027 recruiting class sits at 20, but more could be on the way

If the news from this past week didn't remind you that there's nothing predictable in recruiting, I don't know what else to say. In a matter of hours, the Hurricanes had flipped four-star linebacker Aston Whiteside from Texas A&M and lost defensive tackle DeMarco Jenkins to SMU.

Despite losing Jenkins and four-star offensive lineman Jatori Williams over the past few weeks, Miami still has a top-five class. Rivals/On3 has the Hurricanes class ranked No. 3 in the country, while 247Sports has it as the No. 4 class in the land. The class is a little heavy on defense with 13 of the 20 commits projected to play on that side of the ball.

But Cristobal is clearly focused on adding more to the defense because two of his biggest flip targets--five-star EDGE DJ Jacobs and four-star linebacker Quinton Cypher — play on that side of the ball. Both players are committed to Ohio State, but they were both at Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday to watch the Hurricanes take down Pitt.

As the Early Signing Period gets closer, expect more top players to get another look at Miami and see what Hurricanes football culture is all about.
