A'mir Sears continues his trajectory toward National Player of the Year honors

A'mir Sears has done enough in the first month of the high school football season to be the popular choice for National Player of the Year. 

The five-star athlete and Miami commit suffered a tough loss last week when Columbus fell to St. Thomas Aquinas in a battle of top-10 nationally ranked programs, but Sears added a touchdown reception in the 31-24 loss.

Aquinas didn't want to challenge Sears in the air much after he grabbed three interceptions the week before against Bishop Gorman, but the Raiders didn't need to because running back Tyler Reid had an astounding 338 rushing yards in the win. 

Despite his team taking the loss, Sears made an emphatic statement in the first month of the season, and he has a case for being the top-ranked player in the 2027 class. He was already the top player in the 2028 class before deciding to reclassify, so there's a strong argument to be made.

Sears will face another huge test on Thursday when Columbus takes on local powerhouse Palmetto. The game might not have the national profile of the past two weeks, but Palmetto is regarded as one of the top teams in Miami-Dade County, which means they are one of the best teams in the state. After that game, Columbus' schedule lightens up considerably and the chances of Sears putting up some eye-popping statistics will be high.

Where does Miami's 2027 recruiting class rank?

The Hurricanes class is ranked as the second-best in the nation according to 247Sports and third overall on Rivals/On3. There are blue-chip recruits throughout the class already and with Sears likely to have a higher ranking when both sites make their final updates, it could overtake Texas A&M as the No. 1 class in the country. 

As exciting as the 2027 class is, there are players committed to the Hurricanes in the 2028 and 2029 classes that also deserve mention. Leading that charge is quarterback CJ Cypher, who accounted for six more touchdowns last Friday in a big win for his nationally-ranked Carrollton (Ga.) program. 

The big question with Cypher is, of course, whether he plans on reclassifying to the 2028 class, but that decision isn't coming until after the season. Cypher is a big piece of the quarterback room that Shannon Dawson is rebuilding, and I think the Hurricanes believe the sooner the star prospect can get to Coral Gables, the better. 

As for Miami’s 2027 class, Marui Cristobal is mostly done, but he will continue to check in with five-star edge rusher DJ Jacobs (Ohio State commit) and five-star offensive lineman Mark Matthews (Texas A&M commit) in case either player is having second thoughts about their current pledges.
