In a nice moment for Miami Hurricanes fans, former quarterback Cam Ward and 2026 commit Dereon Coleman had in a joint workout session, showcasing a blend of present excellence and future potential for "The U." The recent workout session between Ward and Coleman is a bridge between Miami's present and future.
For Coleman, training alongside a quarterback of Ward's caliber offers invaluable insight into the demands of college football. For Ward, it's an opportunity to mentor and inspire the next generation of Miami QB's, leaving a lasting impact on the program he helped elevate. In the training session, both players went back and forth and showed a level of competitiveness that any football fan would love to see.

Ward began his college career at the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW), quickly making a name for himself earning the Jerry Rice Award in 2020 as the top freshman in the Football Championship Subdivision. Ward's performance caught the attention of larger programs, leading to his transfer to Washington State University in 2022.
Over two seasons with the Cougars, he amassed nearly 7,000 passing yards and 48 passing touchdowns. In 2024, Ward transferred to Miami, where he delivered a season with 4,313 passing yards and 39 touchdowns, earning him the Davey O'Brien Award and a spot as a Heisman Trophy finalist. As Ward prepares for the 2025 NFL Draft, he is projected as a top pick, with teams like the Tennessee Titans expressing significant interest in selecting him with the No. 1 overall pick.
Coleman hails from Orlando, Florida, and is a dynamic dual-threat quarterback from Jones High School. Standing at 6 feet tall and weighing 160 pounds, Coleman has demonstrated exceptional athleticism and leadership on the field. In his sophomore year, he led Jones High to a 10-4 record and a deep playoff run, completing 63.4% of his passes for 2,236 yards and 16 touchdowns, while also rushing for 247 yards and four scores. Coleman's commitment to Miami in July 2024 was a significant win for the Hurricanes, as he chose them over other notable programs.
Since announcing his commitment to Miami, Coleman has been adamant about his choice. In a recent interview, he expressed confusion over continued recruitment efforts from other schools, stating, "My recruitment has been shut down since I committed. I don't know why schools keep offering me. I'm not going to see any other schools. I only have one official visit and that's Miami." It might be safe to say, after his comments and working out with Ward, that Coleman is not going anywhere else any time soon.
